Lutheran Women of Australia (LWA)
‘Women loved by God sharing this love with others’
Lutheran Women of Australia is an association of Lutheran women who aim to encourage a deeper consecration and a greater service to Christ and his church (in particular through the study of the Scriptures); to coordinate and give impetus to the work of the women of the Church; and to foster the bond of Christian fellowship among the women of the Church.
Lutheran Women (a bi-monthly magazine particularly for women) offers articles on living the faith, devotions, Bible study material, and news of women's organisations and events in the LCA.

LWA – Providing help to Mothers and Babies in Papua New Guinea
For pregnant women living in remote areas of Papua New Guinea (PNG), the best they can hope when their babies arrive is to be near a sub-health centre, where one of the trained Lutheran Health Services nurses of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea is stationed. But in reality, for many the experience of childbirth takes place in thatched huts on dirt floors . . . certainly not in any sterile surroundings that the majority of Australians expect and have.
Into situations such as this the birthing kits lovingly provided by Lutheran women in Australia bring the gift of hope and life to newborn babies and their mothers. A few essential items in a kit provided to village health nurses serving in these isolated areas.
The Lutheran women of Australia continue to serve their fellow sisters by packing and sending thousands of these basic kits to PNG where they are gratefully received and continue to save precious lives.
How can you help? Below is a list of the items required for each kit. You are welcome to put together one, or more, kits and send them to: LCA Board for Mission, 197 Archer Street, North Adelaide, South Australia 5006. You are also welcome to send separate items or make a monetary donation to help make up a kit.
What’s in a PNG village birthing kit?
1 metre square of plastic (no particular thickness or quality is required, since it is used to provide a clean area for the delivery and then discarded)
1 metre square of old linen (make sure it is clean)
2 cloth nappies (no disposable ones, may be second hand)
2 safety/nappy pins, useful but not essential
5 -10 squares of gauze available from the chemist, or 3 - 4 inch (75 -100 mm) squares of soft cloth/linen to be used as wipes
2 x 20-25cm (8 -10ins) pieces of ½ inch cotton tape (similar to bias binding) for tying the cord
1 single-edge razor blade (single-edge blades can be bought in boxes of 100)
2 disposable gloves
1 cake of soap
1 baby size singlet (newborn size - may be second hand)
Pack in a press seal or zip lock plastic bag
A suitable small text card from can be added (someone in the village can usually read some English)
Send made-up kits, surplus items and/or donations to the LCA Board for Mission,
197 Archer Street, North Adelaide SA 5006.
Cartons of birthing kits being loaded for dispatch to Papua New Guinea.
